The Congress on Wednesday released its fourth list of candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, naming five nominees and taking the total number of declared candidates to 68 out of 70 seats. Prominent names in the latest list include three-time MLA Surender Kumar, who has been fielded from the Bawana seat, and Arjun Bhadana, son of former Haryana minister Avtar Singh Bhadana, who will contest from the Badarpur constituency.

The other candidates announced in the fourth list are Sumesh Gupta from Rohini, Rahul Dhanak from Karol Bagh, and Virender Bidhuri from Tughlakabad. This list follows the Congress’s third list of 16 candidates released on Tuesday, which included several notable contenders.

In the third list, the party fielded former Union minister Krishna Tirath from Patel Nagar and councillor Ariba Khan from Okhla. Other candidates included Rajesh Gupta from Kirari, Kunwar Karan Singh from Model Town, and Prem Sharma from Hari Nagar.

Congress also named Ishwar Bagri as its candidate for the Gokalpur constituency, replacing Pramod Kumar Jayant.

Earlier in December, Congress released its first and second lists, naming 21 and 26 candidates, respectively. The party fielded ex-MP Sandeep Dikshit from New Delhi to challenge former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and announced Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba as its candidate from Kalkaji to take on Chief Minister Atishi.

The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with counting set for February 8. The ruling AAP has already declared candidates for all 70 seats, while the BJP has announced 59 names so far. The last date for filing nominations is January 17.

The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years before being ousted in 2013, has faced a tough political landscape in the last two assembly elections. In 2020, the party failed to win any seats, as AAP secured a sweeping victory with 62 out of 70 seats, leaving the BJP with only eight.
