41% of people report increased eye-related health issues

38% have reported enduring dry eyes, eye irritation, and Inflammation in the months of pollution.

A recent survey conducted by healthcare provider Pristyn Care has revealed alarming findings about the impact of pollution on eye, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) health. The survey, which included responses from 56,176 individuals across cities such as Delhi, Meerut, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, Rohtak, Chandigarh, Kanpur, etc; found that nearly half (41%) noticed a significant increase in eye-related health issues during high pollution periods, while 55% reported similar problems affecting their ears, nose, or throat.

38% have reported enduring dry eyes, eye irritation, and Inflammation in the months of pollution. Redness and itching also emerged as common symptoms, with respondents highlighting a marked increase in these issues during pollution surges. ENT problems such as sore throats, nasal irritation, and ear discomfort were also prevalent, causing significant discomfort and raising concerns about long-term health impacts. Yet, 68% say they do not consult a healthcare professional for these ENT issues, that may be linked to pollution.

Dr. Dhirendra Singh, ENT Surgeon, Pristyn Care, says, “While the alarming air quality is concerning for the health of all, children are particularly vulnerable to it. Their developing respiratory organs and systems are more susceptible to long-term damage. Increased exposure to such air can irritate sensitive mucous membranes in the nose and ears, which may result in chronic conditions over time. Reducing outdoor exposure, wearing masks, and staying hydrated are essential, especially when the statistics suggest that a significant number of people don’t consider this to be a grave issue. In metropolitan areas, where several construction sites already add dirt and pollutants to the air, enough to cause discomfort for many, the pollution is only going to make matters worse, resulting in persistently depleting ENT well-being. Eye health should also be given particular attention, where protective eyewear and enough rest come into play”

Commenting on the issue, Dr. Vaibhav Kapoor, Co-founder, Pristyn Care said, “It is shocking to find how lightly people entertain pollution and its detrimental impact on health. The increase in eye and ENT-related health issues highlights the urgent need for preventive measures. With rising pollution levels, individuals need to take proactive steps to protect their health. As healthcare providers, we are alarmed but committed to raising awareness about safeguarding both eye and ENT health, especially during these challenging times.”

Despite these challenges, the survey highlighted a lack of adequate preventive measures among the public. Only 35% of respondents reported wearing protective eyewear or sunglasses, and almost 40% admitted to taking no specific precautions for ENT-related issues during high pollution days. Yet, more than half report a concern about the long-term effects of pollution on eye and ENT health.

The findings highlight the urgent need for greater awareness and action to address the health impact of pollution. With winter worsening air quality, individuals must take proactive steps to safeguard their eye and ENT health by using masks and sunglasses, limiting outdoor exposure, and seeking medical advice when symptoms persist.
