India is host to many beautiful and famous waterfalls that attract tourists based in the country and even foreigners living outside. But do you know that the nation also boasts of a few secret hidden gems among the waterfalls that are hard to get a view of? These waterfalls don’t easily show up on any online maps and require extensive trekking. Here are five hidden waterfalls in India that travellers must trek to explore.

Hebbe Falls, Karnataka

The diverse and green state of Karnataka is home to a waterfall that has remained secret from regular tourists. Hidden among coffee plantations and jungle hills is the Hebbe Falls, which is located in Kemmangundi in Chikmagalur. Trekking or going through a bumpy cycle ride past the jungle roads is the only means to reach this place. Bifurcating into two streams – Dodda Hebbe and Chikka Hebbe – this waterfall creates a natural pool and provides a breathtaking experience.

Agaya Gangai Falls, Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu’s remote Kolli Hills lies the Agaya Gangai Falls. Travellers must undergo a 1,200-step trek in the tropical forest to reach. During their trek, tourists will experience hazy, natural views and get to hear the birds chirping in the backdrop. Once reached, the full-blown waterfall at the base instils an extremely soothing vibe as travellers reconnect with nature at a deeper level. The exact location of this place remains a mystery. It is learnt that sages occupy the caves built near the waterfall.

Bandaje Falls, Karnataka

Another of Karnataka’s hidden waterfalls is the Bandaje Falls, situated in the Western Ghats near Charmadi Ghat. This waterfall is another rarely visited spot, requiring a physically demanding trek to be completed for viewing. The route to the fall contains ancient ruins, meadows and dense forests. But the effort is entirely worth it as it is understood that a mere glance of this waterfall becomes a memory to savour with the flowing water plummeting in the valley below.

Marmala Waterfalls, Kerala

Found in Kottayam near Erattupetta in Kerala, the Marmala Waterfalls is one of the hardest places to track down as it requires a two-kilometre stepover on rock and rubber plantation landscapes. Once reached, tourists are left mesmerised by a 40-meter-high waterfall surrounded by dense greenery. A natural wonder, this waterfall makes the strenuous trek worth the fatigue with its scintillating views and overall calming experience.

Thommankuthu Waterfalls, Kerala

Another seldom-visited waterfall, Thommankuthu Waterfalls, is located in the Idukki district in Kerala. It requires a painstaking trek of five kilometres for travellers to reach. Thommankuthu Waterfalls is also a special multi-tiered fall that has seven different steps, each offering tourists a unique view of the natural pool below. Since the trek goes past forests, tourists might experience a sense of seclusion but the area full of vegetation and wildlife also provides a feeling of discovery to nature enthusiasts.
