Migraines can be much more severe than ordinary headaches. In addition to throbbing pain on one side of the head, symptoms of migraines may include blurry vision, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. As per experts, pain can last for several hours to days, causing difficulties in daily activities. Among women, the most common reason behind migraines is hormonal imbalance. The neurological disorder can be triggered by fluctuations in estrogen levels, especially before or during menstrual periods, around menopause and at the time of pregnancy.

Certain medications, alcohol and excessive caffeine intake may trigger migraine as well. Stress, irregular sleep patterns and intense physical exertion can provoke more frequent attacks. Certain odours or perfumes and an unhealthy diet are some other common causes of migraines.

While people dealing with migraine issues often use pain relievers like NSAIDS and acetaminophen, behavioural measures and lifestyle changes can sometimes be the most effective way to handle it. Here are five suggestions on how to battle migraine pain–

Rest in a calm environment

No matter how intense the pain, it’s crucial to rest properly when migraines strike. Since the eyes become sensitive to light and flashes, a dark, quiet room is highly recommended. If vomiting occurs due to the pain, it’s important to stay hydrated by increasing water intake to prevent dehydration. To relieve tension in the muscles, applying hot or cold compresses to the head or neck can help. Ice packs, in particular, provide a numbing effect, offering additional relief from the pain.

Sleep well

Migraines can be triggered by inadequate night sleep. Patients are recommended to follow certain sleep hours every day and refrain from taking naps during the day to keep the routine the same. Soothing music and reading books before sleep can be beneficial.

Control stress

Migraines and stress go hand-in-hand. So, a calm mind is a must to relieve the pain. When feeling the lack of energy, a quick walk can serve as a reboot. Deep and slow breathing may also aid in relaxation.

Work out regularly

During exercise, the body releases certain chemicals that can restrict pain signals from reaching the brain cells. It will also help in reducing anxiety and depression, which generally worsen migraines.

Maintain a healthy diet

Migraine patients must not skip meals, as an empty stomach may trigger the pain. Certain things like aged cheese, chocolate and caffeine should be avoided to remain risk-free.
