Dolly Parton wants to be “shiny, sparkly and seen”.
The 78-year-old country star has always dressed to please herself and tells her styling team to reflect her personality with “flamboyant” pieces that are “extra” shiny.
She recently told Grazia magazine: “It’s so funny that people think I have the ‘perfect’ image.
“I never cared what anybody thought about it.
“I have nice things now but, back in the day, before I had anybody that had any style or taste, I just dressed the way I wanted to.
“I still tell the people that work with me now, my outfits need to be over-exaggerated, extra shiny, kind of flashy, flamboyant, because that’s my personality.
“I want to be shiny, sparkly and seen.”
The ‘Jolene’ hitmaker doesn’t “follow fashion” and never thinks about trends.
She said: “I don’t follow fashion. That’s why I almost laugh every time someone says I’m a style icon because I feel no pressure about fashion.
“I do not consider myself fashionable.”
And Dolly is happy to shrug off her sparkles when she’s behind closed doors.
She said: “I can wear a tracksuit and look like hell when I’m at home! Everybody’s got their slouchy, comfy clothes.”
The ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker previously admitted she sometimes sleeps with make-up on because she doesn’t want her husband, Carl Dean, to feel he “sleeps with a hag”.
She told Allure: “Sometimes I’m too tired to clean my face at night. I work hard, so sometimes it’s like I just fall in the bed.
“Then I get up in the mornings and clean my face and do whatever you’re supposed to do with your skin.
“I don’t every night go to bed with makeup on. If I’ve been home riding [horses] or if I’ve been doing other [active] things, I’ll go ahead and clean my face.
“Plus, I like to look pretty for my husband. I don’t want to go to bed with the rollers and the Clearasil and all kinds of stuff stuck on my face and then get cleaned up and leave the next day so everybody else could see me [looking] pretty, but he sleeps with a hag!”
