Sam Goodman’s world title dream is in tatters, with the Australian pugilist forced to withdraw from his already rescheduled blockbuster fight with Naoya Inoue in Japan.

Goodman picked up a cut at training four weeks ago, leading to his world title Christmas Eve fight with Inoue being rescheduled for January 24.

But the Sydney underdog has since suffered another setback and been forced to pull out of the fight for the super-bantamweight crown again.

“No Limit Boxing regrets to announce that Sam Goodman has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Naoya Inoue on January 24 due to a recurrence of his eye injury,” the promoters said in a statement on Saturday.

Goodman, 26, needed four stitches last month following “a freak accident” in a sparring session at a Sydney gym and initially feared he would miss his chance to take on the unbeaten Inoue, one of the sport’s most in-demand talents after his 25 knockouts in 28 bouts.

His latest withdrawal is a crushing setback for his career.

“We wish Sam a full and speedy recovery and will provide updates on the event in due course.”
