Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis may have been the main attractions of the Melbourne derby, but they were far from the biggest stars in the building as tennis royalty dropped by the Big Bash.
Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic was a surprise onlooker during the typically dour start to a Marvel Stadium clash but was well and truly invested as Stars skipper Stoinis fought the Renegades’ fire with fire.
The Serbian was caught on camera watching in disbelief from the edge of his seat as the West Aussie all-rounder monstered a ball high into the air only for it to somehow fall in the lap of Kane Richardson at deep mid-on.
Djokovic took some time to sign a few signatures for fans but made the rookie error of heading down the race while one-man wrecking ball Maxwell was still batting.
The mercurial star had to soak up the pressure on another sub-par Renegades home pitch, but just as Djokovic was headed for the race, he cut loose in incredible style.
With his team’s season on the line and his side teetering at 7-75, the brutal all-rounder showed no mercy, blasting 10 sixes, including one monster that was measured at 122 metres and will be in the running for the biggest of the tournament.
With one over of the first innings remaining, Maxwell needed 10 runs to reach his third century but was halted by Richardson’s first delivery, chopping a length ball onto his stumps for 90.
However, the knock gave the Stars a competitive total of 165.
