Mahakumbh is more than a religious event; it is a celebration of faith, culture, and unity that brings millions of people together.
Mahakumbh 2025: The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the most important religious and cultural events in Hinduism, has started in Prayagraj. This year, it will take place from January 13 to February 26. Millions of devotees gather to take a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet. It is believed that bathing here washes away sins and leads to salvation.
Shahi Snan dates
The Mahakumbh will have three Shahi Snans (royal baths) in 2025. The first is today, January 14, on Makar Sankranti. The second will happen on January 29, Mauni Amavasya, and the third on February 3, Basant Panchami. Other important bathing days include Paush Purnima, Maghi Purnima, and Mahashivratri, but they are not considered Shahi Snans.
Why is it called Shahi Snan?
The name “Shahi Snan” means “royal bath.” It is special because saints and ascetics, especially Naga sadhus, bathe first on these days. They arrive in grand processions on elephants, horses, and chariots, making it look royal. In ancient times, even kings would join the sages, which added to the tradition’s grandeur.
History of Mahakumbh
The Kumbh Mela’s origins come from the story of Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean, from Hindu mythology. During this event, a pot (kumbh) of nectar (amrit) appeared. Lord Vishnu, in the form of Mohini, saved the nectar from demons. Some drops of this nectar fell at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik, making these places holy.
Significance of Mahakumbh
Prayagraj is a sacred city because of the Triveni Sangam. The Mahakumbh happens every 12 years, but 2025 is extra special as it occurs only once every 144 years due to rare planetary positions.
Apart from the Shahi Snans, devotees participate in temple visits, prayers, and charity. Cultural activities like bhajans (devotional songs) and spiritual talks add to the experience. Yoga and meditation are also popular during the festival.
