The hand-cut chips and spit-roast beef yeeros made by Greek expat Stamatios (Steve) “Taki” Plangetis, the original owner of Marrickville institution The Yeeros Shop, are the stuff of Sydney food legend. Now, after a 13-year hiatus, they’re back at My Father’s Yeeros in Ramsgate.

The small takeaway shop opened to packed crowds in December, when customers waited up to 45 minutes to try the yeeros, souvlaki and chips they remembered from their childhoods.

The chips (from $6) are pale, roughly cut and full of flavour, wrapped in white butcher’s paper; the yeeros (from $14) are old-school, with house-made tzatziki, lettuce, tomato and onion wrapped in a large, thin pita; and (almost) everything is made using the same recipes Plangetis developed during his 37-year tenure at The Yeeros Shop.

Plangetis and his wife Maria founded The Yeeros Shop on Illawarra Road in 1976. They continued working there after handing the reins to their son and daughter-in-law, John and Olympia Plangetis, in 2000. The business remained in the family until it was sold in 2013.

With their four children now grown and able to pitch in, Olympia says the pair decided it was time to give yeeros another crack − this time, in the bayside suburb of Ramsgate, and with the option of a flatter traditional pita or the smaller, fluffier alternative which has since grown in popularity.

“We were not anticipating this response,” Olympia says, admitting they struggled to meet demand during their first few weeks.

“We have been completely overwhelmed … but we’re back on track now, our timing is getting better, and we’re improving every day.”

On a Friday night, the outdoor space feels like a family reunion, with multiple generations gathering for dinner at plastic tables. Olympia says they’ve been treating Steve like a celebrity.

“Initially, he was here every day, helping us and standing outside to greet everyone,” she says.

“He was completely surprised … I don’t think he realised how much he was loved by everyone. But he’s the most wonderful, hardworking man and … that love he had for his work showed over the counter for so many years.

“He touched a lot of people.”

The menu also features mixed yeeros plates (from $27) and souvlaki plates (from $26) with chips and Greek salad, with single souvlaki skewers from $6 and generous servings of yeeros meat from $15.

It was important for the family to continue making their food in the same way they always have, Olympia says. That means everything is handmade, from the chips which are hand-cut and blanched each morning (“I’ll be honest, they don’t look as good as frozen chips but they taste a lot better”), to the chicken, pork, lamb and beef that’s marinated overnight, then cooked on the day of serving.

“This is a family business, and my family eats here too, and I want to give them the best quality food − made with love,” she says.

Open daily for lunch and dinner.
