Pat Cummins has led Sunrisers Hyderabad to a five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings to revive his side’s chances of reaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs.
The Australia skipper produced the figures of 2-21 to help bowl out the Super Kings for 154 with one ball remaining in Chennai.
Hyderabad chased down the victory target with eight balls to spare.
“That was great. A few things came together tonight,” Hyderabad captain Cummins said after the match.
“You always get a bit down after a few losses, but the boys played well.
“Our record against CSK isn’t great here, so with five games left, we’re still hopeful. We’ll give it a good crack.
“You always wish we’d finished that a bit more comfortably and been a bit more clinical.
“But, overall, happy to get a win.”
Cummins was at the heart of Hyderabad’s triumph, winning a crucial toss and deciding to field.
He returned the most economical four overs of his IPL campaign while taking the key wickets of hard-hitting opener Ayush Mhatre (30 off 19 balls) and all-rounder Anshul Kamboj (2).
Medium-pacer Harshal Patel was named player of the match for his 4-28, which included the prize wicket of Super Kings captain MS Dhoni for 6.
In Hyderabad’s innings, Cummins’s fellow Australian Travis Head failed to kick on again after getting to 19 off 16 balls at the top of the order.
He was bowled by Kamboj after swinging wildly across the line.
Hyderabad made hard work of the run chase and was grateful to Ishan Kishan’s 44 and an unbeaten 32 off 22 balls from Kamindu Mendis.
It was the side’s third win of the season, moving them to eighth in the 10-team table.
