Egg freezing gives women something invaluable: time. Thanks to technological advancements, the process is now more effective, accessible, and affordable than ever before.
Egg freezing offers women autonomy over their reproductive choices.
Motherhood is evolving. In a world where women are increasingly prioritising their careers, personal growth, and mental well-being, the traditional timeline for starting a family is being reimagined. Age is no longer the sole determinant in the decision to have children. At the heart of this transformation is egg freezing – a ground breaking advancement that offers women the freedom to preserve their fertility and take control of their reproductive choices. With egg freezing, motherhood becomes a decision guided by personal readiness, not biological pressure.
Why More Women Are Switching to Egg Freezing
Recommended Stories
Egg freezing has emerged as a transformative option in reproductive health, offering women the freedom to delay motherhood without compromising their future fertility. As more women focus on building careers, pursuing higher education, or navigating health challenges, traditional family planning timelines are shifting. Egg freezing preserves fertility and grants women greater autonomy, allowing them to choose when to start a family based on readiness, not rigid biological clocks or societal expectations. It’s a bold step toward reclaiming control over one’s reproductive journey.
“Your Biological Clock Is Ticking” – Not Anymore
For decades, women have been trailed by the phrase, “Your biological clock is ticking” – a reminder that time waits for no one, especially when it comes to fertility. This pressure often lands hardest when women are focused on building careers, completing their education, or simply not ready to start a family. For many, balancing personal aspirations with societal expectations becomes an impossible juggling act.
Talking about egg freezing, Dr. Swetha P, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, notes, “It allows women to preserve their fertility today and return to the idea of motherhood later – on their terms, without racing against the clock. This isn’t just a scientific advancement; it’s a redefinition of choice, timing, and freedom.”
Understanding the Egg Freezing Process
Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, is a multi-step procedure that gives women the opportunity to preserve their fertility for future use, on their terms. Dr. Swetha P shares how it works:
- Hormonal Stimulation: Throughout 10 to 12 days, women are administered hormones to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, instead of the single egg typically released each month. Throughout this period, doctors closely monitor progress with routine blood tests and ultrasounds to track egg development.
- Egg Retrieval: Once the eggs are mature, they are collected during a short outpatient procedure under anaesthesia, usually lasting 20 to 30 minutes.
- Freezing and Storage: After retrieval, the mature eggs are immediately frozen using a rapid-freezing technique called vitrification and stored in liquid nitrogen for future use.
Dr. Swetha P adds, “Unlike IVF, where fertilisation typically occurs soon after egg retrieval, egg freezing allows women to store unfertilized eggs, giving them the flexibility to decide when (and with whom) they want to start a family. It’s a process that places reproductive autonomy directly in women’s hands.”
Reversing the Cultural Tradition: A New Family Planning Perspective
Despite growing progress, many women still face pressure from family and society to have children by their 30s, often at the cost of setting aside professional goals or personal dreams. Egg freezing challenges that outdated narrative. It empowers women with autonomy over their reproductive choices, allowing them to pursue careers, education, and ambitions without guilt or fear of missing the “right” window for motherhood.
Perhaps most importantly, egg freezing gives women something invaluable: time. Time to plan, to grow, to choose—on their terms.
