The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially announced the introduction of a newly designed Rs 20 note, which will be part of a fresh currency series. While the note will carry updated features, it will retain much of its existing appearance, ensuring familiarity for the public.

According to the RBI, the new Rs 20 note will have a light greenish-yellow colour and measure 63mm by 129mm. The reverse side of the note will feature an image of the Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting India’s rich cultural legacy. The numeral ’20’ will be printed in floral patterns on both sides and written in Devanagari script. The note will also include essential identifiers such as ‘RBI’, ‘Bharat’, ‘India’, and ’20’ in micro-lettering.

The front side of the note will feature familiar elements, including a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, the Ashoka Pillar emblem, the Swachh Bharat logo, a language panel displaying the denomination in various Indian languages, the RBI governor’s signature, the guarantee clause, and the RBI’s official emblem. These elements aim to ensure both authenticity and security, in line with the RBI’s commitment to enhanced note design.

What About Old Notes? The RBI has assured the public that existing Rs 20 notes will continue to be legal tender. There is no plan to withdraw or demonetise them, and they will remain in circulation alongside the newly issued ones.

But Why A New Note? This initiative is part of RBI’s broader goal to introduce more secure and high-quality currency notes. The updated Rs 20 note will include enhanced anti-counterfeiting measures and forms part of the RBI’s ongoing effort to promote Indian heritage through design elements like the Ellora Caves. The new note is expected to be gradually released into circulation in the coming weeks.
