Among the various varieties of mango, Himsagar has now established a strong presence in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar. Until recently, this delicious mango variety was largely confined to West Bengal and Odisha. Now, it has emerged as a new hope for farmers in the Mithila region.

Due to its sweet fragrance, juicy pulp, and ability to bear fruit consistently every year, this mango is becoming the first choice for both the market and orchardists. In terms of size, only three to four Himsagar mangoes make up one kilogram.

Pappu Thakur, a farmer in the Sitamarhi district who has been cultivating mangoes on one and a half acres of land, has planted over two dozen Himsagar mango trees in his orchard. He explains that he initially planted just two trees on a trial basis, but later expanded the number to 30. He has planted 10 more trees this year. Its cultivation is gradually expanding.

The farmer shared that the biggest speciality of the Himsagar mango is its ability to bear abundant fruit every year. Unlike other mango varieties that bear fruit only in alternate years, this one produces consistently, making it distinct from others.

Growing Demand

During the months of May and June, this mango variety is readily available in wholesale markets and retail stalls. Its fragrance is so distinctive that customers can recognise it from a distance.

Local vendors report that buyers often come specifically asking for Himsagar, and despite its higher price compared to other varieties, it sells out quickly. Farmers interested in cultivating this variety can contact or visit Pappu Thakur for guidance.

Cultivation

A specific climate is required for the successful cultivation of Himsagar mangoes. A hot and humid environment, along with loamy soil, is considered ideal. Pappu Thakur says that the best time for plantation is at the onset of the monsoon.

A spacing of 10 by 10 metres is maintained to allow sufficient room for each plant. With the use of organic manure, neem cake, and regular irrigation, these plants begin bearing fruit within 3 to 5 years.

The Himsagar mango contains no fibre; its pulp is exceptionally soft and juicy. The taste is so unique that anyone who tries it once finds it unforgettable.
