Will Ferrell has recorded a new The Simpsons short.

The Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy actor has long been targetted by producers of the beloved animated comedy series for a guest role, and he’s voiced the role of Mr. Monopoly in a new one-off.

The animated short tells the origin story of Mr. Monopoly and Springfield’s own business mogul, Mr. Burns, and has been created to mark a collaboration between the cartoon and MONOPOLY GO!, which marks The Simpsons’ first appearance in a mobile game for 13 years.

The short sees a chance encounter in Springfield reigniting an old grudge dating back to the men’s college days at Yale, where they fell out over a stolen top hat.

Matt Selman, Showrunner and Executive Producer of The Simpsons, said: “The Simpsons has always been incredibly collaborative, so when we bring Springfield into a new space — especially mobile gaming for the first time in many years — finding partners who really understand the humor and spirit of the show matters a lot.

“The Scopely team brought a ton of creativity and attention to detail to this experience, and they packed the game with jokes, references and weird little surprises that fans will have fun discovering. I was especially happy we reignited a decades-old billionaire rivalry between Mr. Burns and Mr. Monopoly.”

From 3 June until 29, MONOPOLY GO! players, aka Tycoons, can build, explore, and progress through some of Springfield’s most famous locations, with iconic characters including Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa Simpson, and Mr. Burns, appearing alongside Mr. Monopoly and Scottie.

Chance cards will feature Simpsons references and memes, and players will be able to bribe Chief Wiggum to avoid being sent to jail.

Victor Diaz-Roig, President of Games at Scopely, said: “MONOPOLY GO! and The Simpsons share a love of mischief, humour and not playing by the rules, so bringing these two worlds together felt natural from the start.

“Working closely with The Simpsons creative team, our talented gamemakers at Scopely set out to do much more than simply place Springfield inside the game; we wanted to build an entirely new shared universe where these iconic characters, stories and gameplay experiences could cross over. Every part of the season was designed with our Tycoons in mind, introducing fresh ways to play the game they love, while opening the doors for Simpsons fans to step into MONOPOLY GO! for the very first time.”

Earlier this year, showrunner Matt urged Will to sign up for a guest role on The Simpsons.

Addressing the actor via People magazine, Matt, 54, begged: “Come on, Will. We keep writing great stuff for you.”
