Security agencies at Imphal’s Bir Tikendrajit International Airport on Thursday arrested two alleged drug smugglers and seized 4 kilograms of suspected brown sugar concealed in their hand baggage, officials said.
The arrests were made during routine security screening at around 11:20 a.m. when personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detected suspicious packets in the luggage of two passengers scheduled to board an IndiGo flight to Kolkata.

The accused were identified as Kh. Sabir Ahamed (24), son of Kh. Burhanuddin, and Syed Sabir Ali (26), son of Syed Najub Ali, both residents of Kiyamgei Oinam Loukon in Imphal East district.
According to officials, CISF personnel noticed anomalies while scanning the passengers’ hand baggage through an X-ray machine. A subsequent inspection led to the recovery of two packets containing approximately 2 kilograms of suspected brown sugar each, weighing a total of 4 kilograms.
Following the detection, airport authorities alerted local law enforcement agencies. A team from Singjamei Police Station, accompanied by a mobile forensic unit and an Executive Magistrate, arrived at the airport to carry out verification and complete legal formalities.
The contraband was seized in the presence of the Executive Magistrate after due procedure was followed, officials said.
The two accused, along with the seized narcotic substance, were subsequently handed over to Singjamei Police Station for further investigation.
A case is being processed under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigations are underway to determine the source and intended destination of the seized contraband, officials added.
