Six persons have been arrested in connection with the leak of footage from Jana Nayagan, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s long-delayed film that was billed as his farewell to cinema before entering politics. The film’s release has remained stalled following a certification dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The arrests were made by the Cyber Crime Wing after footage from the film surfaced on social media and messaging platforms, triggering concerns among the makers and the wider film industry over piracy and unauthorised circulation of copyrighted content.

According to officials, the accused were allegedly involved in sharing and distributing the leaked footage through various digital channels. Authorities said the arrests were part of an ongoing crackdown on those responsible for disseminating the material online.

Investigators are examining electronic devices seized from the accused and tracing the source of the leak to determine how the footage was obtained and circulated. Officials said efforts are underway to identify additional individuals who may have been involved in uploading, forwarding or otherwise distributing the content.

Cyber crime authorities have launched a broader probe into the piracy network linked to the incident. Digital forensic teams are analysing online activity, social media accounts and communication records to track those responsible for the original leak as well as its subsequent circulation across platforms.

The incident has renewed concerns within the film industry over digital piracy, which producers and distributors say can cause substantial financial losses and affect a film’s commercial prospects.

Authorities reiterated that sharing copyrighted material without authorisation is a punishable offence and urged the public to refrain from circulating leaked content. Officials indicated that further arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.

Jana Nayagan remains one of the most anticipated Tamil film releases, and the latest development comes amid intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat online piracy and protect intellectual property rights.
