Kimberly Wyatt had a hip replacement operation – and expects to need another in the future.
The 44-year-old singer is currently preparing for the Pussycat Dolls’ comeback tour and while she is working hard on her dance moves, including her signature standing split, she is still “not totally” pain free after having the joint replaced two years ago.
She told The Times newspaper: “The leg lift is coming [on tour].
“I’ve been getting in my ballet moves, my relevés, my pliés, using a pull-up bar every week. That leg is my legacy…
“The future will probably be another hip replacement at some point”.
Despite the Pussycat Dolls’ success in the late 2000s, Kimberly acknowleged she and her bandmates – “lead singer” Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, Carmit Bachar, Melody Thornton and Jessica Sutta – were “just employees” as the brand and band name was owned by founder Robin Antin.
She said: “We were just employees. The feeling of being replaceable wasn’t just an undertone — it was widely acknowledged…
“One of our first instructions was being told to look like ‘anorexic aliens’. I luckily took that as working out at 9.30am every single day, eating a lot of tuna and grapefruit, going on hikes and being able to show them just how irreplaceable I was, how much they needed to have me in that group.”
Kimberly felt totally powerless until she left the group along with Jessica, Ashley, and Melody in 2010.
Asked if they were paid properly, she said: “I mean, what’s properly?” For me, in the end, no. My celebrity wasn’t being driven; I wasn’t getting my pockets filled. There was no social media, no way to get your name and your likeness out there. The label owned my likeness; I didn’t even have my own name.”
But although Robin is still involved with the reunion, which only features Kimberly, Nicole, and Ashley, the blonde beauty feels things are different this time aorund.
She said: “It feels more harmonious than it’s ever felt, and there are not as many levels of people to answer to. We’re much more in the driving seat.
“Nicole, Ashley and me are tighter than ever. We’re in a place where we’re able to have some seriously honest conversations. [There is] collaboration and an openness and communication that feels like a new level of potential for the brand”.
But the Buttons hitmaker – who has three children with husband Max Rogers – admitted it is a “very tricky situation” after the remaining three former bandmembers claimed they had been snubbed from the reunion plans.
She said: “I love all the girls [but] I’m in a very tricky situation and can only do what I can do.
“To perform at the O2 — that’s a yes from me. I don’t know if that call will come round much more in my fifties and sixties, so at this point I’m willing to say yes to the Pussycat Dolls.”
