Emergency services have rushed to meet a man at the Western Australian coastline, after he was bitten by a shark.
The incident is believed to have unfolded shortly before 11.20am local time, near Michaelmas Island, off the coast of Albany — about 420km south east of Perth.
Sydney fishing guide Justin Duggan explains what attracts sharks to attack in the wake of three separate incidents in Sydney waters this week.
According to a WA Police spokeswoman, the man is being taken by boat to the Albany marina where he will be met by paramedics.
“A male person is believed to have been bitten by a shark and is being conveyed by boat to shore,” the spokeswoman said.
“At this stage, we have no further details to confirm.”
A St John Ambulance spokesman said the man is believed to be in his 30s and have suffered critical injuries.
A shark, estimated about 4.5m in length, was reported by a member of the public to Shark Smart on Saturday morning.
The incident comes three weeks after Steven Mattaboni, 38, was killed while spearfishing off Rottnest Island.
The father-of-two was believed to have been bitten by great white shark about 1km offshore on May 16.
