A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Perth and southern WA, as two cold fronts moving across the State threaten to cause flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued the warning at 1.59pm on Monday, with the worst of the thunderstorm expected to hit within the next several hours.

Rockingham, in the Perth metropolitan area, and parts of the South West and Great Southern including Harvey and Kojonup will likely be impacted by the severe storm.

Heavy rainfall is expected for those areas, with BoM warning it could lead to flash flooding.

Perth is expected to cop up to 25mm of rain.

The warning comes just hours after 28.2mm of rain was recorded at Quaelup within just 30 minutes, and 25.2mm was recorded in Balingup over one hour.

STORM SAFETY ADVICE

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

  • If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.
  • Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
  • Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning.
  • If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home.
  • If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
  • Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
  • Slow down and turn your headlights on.
  • Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
  • If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.
