Fans have had their first look at the much-anticipated fifth instalment of Shrek, almost a year out from its scheduled release.
Universal Pictures released the official teaser trailer of DreamWorks Animation film Shrek 5 on Wednesday, slated for a release in June, 2027.
Starting out with a storybook themed recap of the original film, the trailer features all of the film’s favourite characters, Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, and the Gingerbread Man.
“Oh my god it’s happening, it’s really happening,” exclaims Donkey.
Stars Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are returning for number five, directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon.
While the plot has not yet been revealed, the characters are travelling to the kingdom named “Further, Further Away”.
“Shrek and Donkey, two stalwart friends, off on another whirlwind, big city adventure,” said Donkey.
A franchise renowned for its soundtrack, Smash Mouth’s All Star can be heard in the trailer.
In the sneak-peek, Shrek looks markedly older, with wrinkles marking his eyes and forehead.
The animation style also differs from the earlier films, which has been met with mixed reactions by fans of the franchise.
On Shrek’s Instagram post sharing the trailer, some commenters expressed their excitement at the release, but many shared their disappointment in the new animation.
“Why change the animation, I never understand the thought process that goes behind to change something iconic,” one wrote.
“WE WANT THE OLD SHREK BACK NOT THIS!” wrote another.
The last film, Shrek Forever After, was released 16 years ago.
There appears to be a significant time jump since the fourth film, where Shrek and Fiona’s triplets were newly born. The teaser shows them as adults.
The grown-up triplets will be voiced by Zendaya, Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernandez, and Skyler Gisondo.
To date, the film franchise has raked in $2.9 billion ($A4.1 billion) at the global box office.
