A father has died after he was allegedly savagely beaten by two men outside a Melbourne primary school during pick-up time.
A Clyde North man, 63, was rushed to hospital with critical injuries after he was allegedly assaulted at Strathaird Reserve about 3.15pm last Friday. He died in hospital six days later.
Police allege a man aged 21, of no fixed address, and another Narre Warren South man, 22, assaulted the father.
They have been charged with recklessly causing serious injury.
Both men are in custody as homicide detectives consider alternate charges, following post-mortem results.
“Police believe the parties involved were known to each other,” a spokesman said.
The alleged incident happened near Strathaird Primary School in Melbourne’s southeast.
The school offered children who witnessed the alleged incident wellbeing support in a letter sent to parents.
A witness told the Herald Sun lots of kids saw the assault and were “shaken up” by the shocking event.
“They were terrified. I could see him lying on the ground and he couldn’t get up. He appeared to be knocked out,” she said.
“I believe his child was there when it happened.
“There were two men standing over him. They were yelling at him and hurting him with a pole or a metal torch. There were people yelling at them to stop,” she said.
“It was quite quick, then they jumped in their car and drove off.
“This should never have happened at a school.”
Another parent who pulled over in his car to provide first aid when he saw the man on the ground, and said the victim was incoherent with blood on the back of his head.
“I made sure everyone was calling the police and ambulance,” David Wade told the Herald Sun.
“He said he felt dizzy and like vomiting. Poor old bloke.
“It was home-time. It’s the most popular school exit.
“I’m just outraged they did it in front of the kids. I don’t care what their problem is. Just sort it out somewhere else.”
