Southeastern parts of the nation had a remarkably warm start to winter this year with Sydney recording its longest stint of June days above 20C in 170 years.

Weatherzone reported temperatures were about two to three degrees above average in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Hobart throughout June.

But the winter warmth was coming to an end with a cold front moving across eastern Australia bringing rain, wind and temperatures below 20C across the weekend.

Adelaide had a wet start to winter, and while Weatherzone said it was not unusual for this time of year, the city only had four dry days during June so far.

“So far, out of the 20 days of the month, it has rained on 16 days.

“The wettest period was the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday, the 16th, when the capital of South Australia received 21.8mm,” meteorologist Aline Ribeiro said.
