Milo Ventimiglia believes being a father has made him a better actor.

The 48-year-old star – who has 16-month-old Ke’ala with pregnant wife Jarah Mariano – thinks having a family of his own has given him a whole new depth of emotion to draw on in his work, and knowing he needs to provide for them has made his projects more meaningful.

He told People magazine: “Life is just different. Being a father has deepened the well of emotions that I experience.

“We deal in emotions, so being able to tap into that well is more impactful for the work.

“It also makes the work more important, because I’m not just doing this for me, for my crew, for my cast. I’m doing this for my family, to provide, and I understand what time away from them means and just the gravity of all of it.”

And as a result, the This Is Us actor has become “a little more mindful” of the jobs he will take, especially because he knows his kids will want to see his work in the future.

He said: “I think about my kids, and I’m like, ‘What am I putting out into the world that years down the line, my kids are going to pick up and be like, “Oh, let’s go watch Dad’s TV show?” ’ ”

Shortly before Ke’ala was born, Milo and Jarah lost their Malibu home in the 2025 California wildfires, and though he is “still dealing with insurance” in connection to the tragedy, he’s keen to keep moving forward.

He said: “Some people face tough moments in their lives, and they stop. I’m always propelling forward.

“I’m like, ‘How can I correct this for my family? How can I take a tragic event and a great event, like fires and [the birth of ] my daughter and turn that into my art?’ ”

The I Will Find You star used to chase professional success with his acting, but these days he is trying to “serve others” with his work.

He said: “I’ve kind of done everything and worked with everyone, which is an interesting place to be when you’re 48.

“When I was younger, I wanted to win an Academy Award. I wanted to be impressive. Now I no longer feel like I’m acting for myself. I feel like I’m there acting for and serving others. And I’m good with that.”
