Actor Gracy Singh celebrates 25 years of Lagaan, remembers her iconic role as Gauri

As Lagaan completed 25 years of its release, actor Gracy Singh reflected on the film’s journey and the love it continues to receive from audiences. Gracy, who played Gauri in the iconic film, shared that the character became so popular over the years that many people started calling her Gauri in real life.

Marking the milestone on social media, Gracy shared a video reflecting on her journey with the iconic film and expressing gratitude to the team behind its success.

“My iconic film Laagan has completed 25 years of its run, and I’m very fortunate to play the role of Gauri, which had so much impact on the audience that Gauri became my second name in real life. Laagan continues to create history even after 25 years,” she said in the video.

The actor went on to congratulate the cast and crew of the film, while acknowledging the contribution of its key creators.

“I congratulate Aamir Khan, Reena Datta, the great director Ashutosh Gowariker, and the entire cast and crew of the film. Each and every person who has worked in Lagaan has contributed to its success,” she added.

Gracy also thanked audiences for continuing to shower love on Lagaan more than two decades after its release. She said she was happy to celebrate the milestone with the film fraternity and the cast and crew of the movie.

The actor added that she was overwhelmed by the affection and appreciation she had received from fans over the years and expressed her heartfelt gratitude for their support.

Alongside the video, Gracy wrote a heartfelt caption recalling her experience of playing Gauri.

“25 years of Lagaan and the memories are as special as ever. It was an honour to bring Gauri to life, a character and a film which continues to be cherished by audiences even today. Congratulations to @aamirkhanproductions and the entire team for this milestone! (sic),” she wrote.

Released in 2001, Lagaan starred Aamir Khan as Bhuvan, a villager who leads his community in a high-stakes cricket match against British colonial rulers to escape oppressive taxes. Gracy played Gauri, Bhuvan’s loyal companion and love interest, earning praise for her performance as well as her appearances in memorable songs such as Ghanan Ghanan and Radha Kaise Na Jale.

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan and Reena Datta, Lagaan remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films. It became only the third Indian film to receive a nomination in the Academy Award category for Best Foreign Language Film.
