Lionel Messi added another record to his name as he became the World Cup’s all-time top goalscorer, as he put Argentina in the lead against Austria on Monday, June 22. Messi was made to wait until the 38th minute to get the goal to make him achieve the feat.

When the moment came, Messi made no mistake as he produced a signature left-foot strike to put the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net. Messi had scored a hat-trick in the first match against Algeria to get Albiceleste’s World Cup campaign off on the right note.

Messi was once again the focal point for Argentina’s attacks during the first half and had a chance early on to score and break the record. Argentina were awarded a penalty in the 8th minute of the match and Messi stepped up to take the spot. With the fans in the arena waiting with baited breath, the Argentine maestro hit his spot kick wide of the goal.

However, in the 38th minute, history was made. Messi started the attack and fed the ball out wide to Medina by Thiago Almada. The pass from the left back was left alone by Almada and Messi stepped up to wrong foot the Austrian goalkeeper and score the goal.

This also made Messi the first player in history to score in six consecutive matches in the World Cup.
