Samsung appears to be preparing a new addition to its foldable smartphone lineup, and this time it could carry the “Ultra” branding for the first time. Recent reports suggest that what was previously expected to launch as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra may indeed arrive with that name, while the wider variant seen in leaks could simply be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8. While the naming scheme may sound a bit confusing, it points to Samsung positioning the slimmer model as its most premium foldable offering.

Now, a fresh leak suggests that the Ultra model could arrive with a notable display upgrade.

A significant display upgrade could be on the way

According to well-known tipster Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will feature a “significantly enhanced” screen resolution. The claim was shared on X, although the tipster did not reveal any specific figures. It is also unclear whether the upgrade applies to the cover screen, the inner folding display, or both.

That uncertainty has sparked speculation because Samsung’s current foldable already offers sharp displays. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a cover screen with a resolution of 2,520 x 1,080, while the internal folding display comes in at 2,184 x 1,968.

Interestingly, the cover screen is actually more pixel-dense than the larger inner display. As a result, the internal screen may be the one that benefits the most from a resolution boost. However, there is also a possibility that Samsung could improve both displays.

Will users notice the difference?

On paper, a higher-resolution display sounds impressive. In reality, however, Samsung’s foldable screens are already quite crisp. That means the upgrade may not dramatically change the day-to-day user experience. Still, for buyers spending a premium amount on a flagship foldable, additional display improvements could make the device feel even more future-ready.

More than just a display upgrade

The display may not be the only area getting attention. Previous reports indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. The device is also tipped to pack a 5,000mAh battery.

Samsung may also focus on making the foldable even thinner. Rumours suggest the phone could measure around 4.1mm when unfolded, potentially making it slimmer and lighter than its predecessor.

The wider Fold 8 remains a mystery

While details about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra continue to emerge, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 remains largely under wraps. Its availability in certain markets, including Japan, is still unclear. For now, only the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has reportedly appeared in official certification records, adding more weight to speculation that Samsung is preparing a new premium tier in its foldable lineup.

Launch may not be far away

Fortunately, Samsung fans may not have to wait long for answers. The company’s next Unpacked event is expected to take place in London on July 22. If the reports are accurate, Samsung could use the event to reveal the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and other new devices.
