Avatar’s reign as the highest grossing movie of all time is expected to be ended by Avengers: Endgame’s upcoming re-release.
The new Endgame cut, which will feature new footage, is set to drop this September, and Disney has confirmed it will be called Avengers: Endgame Encore.
According to Deadline, Disney reps confirmed the news at CineEurope in Barcelona, the official convention for International Union of Cinemas exhibitors, and also revealed the re-release will have a custom introduction and a special end tag exclusive to Infinity Vision and IMAX releases.
All eyes will also be on the box office figures, to see if Endgame can overcome 2009 motion picture Avatar as the highest grossing movie of all time.
For now, Avatar tops the list with a worldwide gross of $2.923 billion, but Endgame isn’t too far behind at $2.797 billion.
Endgame previously toppled Avatar to take top spot, only for a 2021 re-release of the sci-fi epic to move it back in front.
However, if Endgame’s new cut rakes in more than $126 million it will be back at the highest-grossing films summit.
The film will be released ahead of the next movie in the Avengers series, Avengers: Doomsday, which is due to drop in December.
Doomsday will feature Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Sir Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, and Paul Rudd, who recently admitted he finds it “surreal” to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking to Variety, Rudd said: “It’s a surreal thing and an amazing thing to be a part of that.
“I feel like I’ve made friends with so many of the people over the years, and you mentioned how long it’s been and I think, wow, I’ve been with Marvel for a long time – more than I even realise – but I love whenever I see all the actors that I’ve worked with on these things several times, and there’s something unique to Marvel that is: It makes you feel like a kid.”
