England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Reece James will miss Saturday’s FIFA World Cup Group L clash against Panama after suffering a minor hamstring injury, although the defender is expected to return later in the tournament.

James did not travel with the squad after missing training over the past two days, dealing a blow to England as they look to secure qualification for the knockout rounds. The Three Lions lead Group L on four points, level with Ghana but ahead on goal difference, while Croatia sit third on three points. Panama have already been eliminated after losing both of their opening matches.

Tuchel, however, remains optimistic that James could return if England progress beyond the group stage.

“He has a minor hamstring injury. He was not able to train the last two days,” Tuchel told reporters.

“He’s on an accelerated rehab programme. We will take it game by game but we strongly believe that he will be available for us again in the tournament.”

The England boss admitted the setback came unexpectedly.

“No-one could see that coming. Reece felt good and was in good shape. We would love to have Reece, he’s a good player and we will look for solutions. That’s what we do.”

Tuchel added that a return for the Round of 32 remains possible, although he described the timeline as “tight”.

SAKA FIT AGAIN

England received positive news elsewhere, with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson all returning to training after fitness concerns following the goalless draw against Ghana.

“Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson trained with us today. They had minor issues after the game but everyone is available for us apart from Reece James. We will take a decision tomorrow,” Tuchel said.

Providing an update on Saka, he added: “He’s now fully free of discomfort and is ready to go.”

TRANSFER TALK

Tuchel also addressed speculation surrounding Anderson, who has been linked with a high-profile move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City during the World Cup.

While acknowledging discussions are taking place, the England boss insisted the transfer saga would not distract the midfielder before the Panama fixture.

“The reality is that transfers are going on and big transfers take their time,” Tuchel said.

“We understand things are going on. We will facilitate the transfer but after the match, not before.”

PANAMA WARNING

Despite Panama already being out of the tournament, Tuchel expects a difficult contest and warned against complacency.

Describing Panama as “a well-trained team”, Tuchel said their status as underdogs could make them dangerous because they can play “without pressure”.

England need a positive result against Panama to guarantee their place in the knockout rounds and will hope to do so despite being without James.
