A teacher at a private school in Ahmedabad has been suspended after allegedly slapping a Class 10 student so hard that the boy suffered a ruptured eardrum and may require surgery, officials said. Police have launched an investigation following a complaint filed by the student’s father.

The incident took place at Chanakya School in Ahmedabad’s Nikol area, where the student, enroled in the Gujarati-medium section of Class 10, was attending a physical training (PT) session.

According to the school management, the student was sitting and talking with friends on the school grounds during the PT period when an English-medium teacher, identified as Laxman, approached the group. The teacher allegedly slapped the student across the face, despite having no direct connection with the class.

The impact of the slap was reportedly severe. The student’s left ear became swollen, started bleeding, and he experienced difficulty hearing. School authorities informed the boy’s father, who rushed to the campus after receiving a call.

“When I reached the school, my son said he could not hear properly,” the father alleged. He immediately took the boy to a doctor, where medical examinations reportedly revealed that the eardrum in his left ear had ruptured.

Doctors have advised that if the swelling does not subside within the next week, the student may have to undergo surgery.

The accused teacher has reportedly admitted his mistake before both the school trust and the student’s family. However, the boy’s father has refused to forgive the teacher, citing the seriousness of the injury.

“If my son suffers permanent hearing problems or requires surgery, the responsibility will lie with the school trust and the teacher,” he said, adding that he has decided to pursue legal action.

Following the complaint, the Krishnanagar Police registered a non-cognisable (NC) case and detained the teacher for questioning. An investigation is currently underway.

A police inspector at Krishnanagar Police Station said authorities received information that the student was unable to hear properly after the alleged assault by the teacher. “We have registered an NC complaint and begun an inquiry into the matter,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, Ahmedabad District Education Officer (DEO) Rohit Chaudhary said an inquiry was ordered as soon as the incident came to light.

“Based on the information received so far, the teacher slapped the student while children were on the playground. Orders have been issued for the teacher’s immediate suspension,” Chaudhary said.

The school has also suspended the teacher pending the outcome of the investigation.
