Dr. Seuss made eggs and ham famous, but have you ever tried eggs and jam?

Well, a new survey of 2,000 adults has discovered that a staggering 8% of people enjoy the bizarre combination, with 18% enjoying a slightly more acceptable snack of fries and milkshake.

And 27% of people like tucking into apple slices and cheddar cheese.

The OnePoll.com research looking into the UK’s most unusual food habits also found other favourite combos included cheese and chocolate spread, banana and mayonnaise, cheese with chocolate spread and pizza crust dunked into soft serve ice cream.

Among those questioned, 66% of 18 to 24 year olds said they like pairing up unusual combinations, compared to 15% of those aged 65 and above.

When it comes to over 65s, 78% of them prefer sticking to the more traditional taste – while the survey of everyone showed that over half [56%] would rather avoid the quirky combos.

The research was conducted by Costa Coffee ahead of the launch of the chain teaming up with McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes for a ready-to-drink frappe in a chocolate orange flavour.

A spokesperson said of the results: “Some pairings strike the perfect balance between familiarity and discovery.

“Coffee and chocolate orange is a great example – bringing together two flavours people already know and love in a way that feels both comforting and exciting.”

Faced with unconventional combinations, 29% of adults would only try it if it was free, while 26% said they would think about trying something new, before eventually opting for their regular choice.

While 43% of all those questioned admitted that the best food combinations are the ones you never think are going to work.

A spokesperson for Costa Coffee said: “We’re delighted to see coffee and chocolate orange recognised as one of the nation’s favourite flavour combinations.

“While some of the pairings in the research might divide opinion, it is a pairing that feels instantly familiar and enjoyable.

“As consumers continue to seek out flavours that offer both comfort and a sense of discovery, we’re excited to bring together two iconic brands in a drink that celebrates exactly that.”
