The Philippines will host a World Surf League championship tour event for the first time, amid ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East.
Already a venue in the international qualifier series, the Philippines Pro at the Cloud 9 break on the island of Siargao will be upgraded for later this season and also next year.
It ensures a minimum of 12 events if the Abu Dhabi Pro cannot go ahead.
Adding the Philippines round means a significant restructure for events at the end of the season. Abu Dhabi has been postponed from October 14-18 to November 25-29, a week before the Abu Dhabi Formula One round.
The Philippines Pro will run from October 31 to November 10, and the Portugal round at Peniche has also been moved forward by six days, to October 16-25.
That means Portugal will drop out of the new post-season part of the championship tour schedule.
If Abu Dhabi goes ahead, that event and the Philippines Pro will be in the post-season ahead of the last event, the Pipe Masters on Hawaii’s North Shore.
The Cloud 9 break is noted for a perfect right-hand tube and has been on the qualifying series since 2014.
“I’ve seen some footage of Cloud 9, and it looks like a really fun slab barrel into a big air,” said men’s world No.1 Leonardo Fioravanti.
The championship tour will continue from August 8-18 at Teahupo’o in Tahiti.
