A 16-year-old was bailed by police four days before he allegedly stabbed a teenage boy to death metres from a hospital in Melbourne’s north.
Mickleham teenager Darweish Mohamed was found with critical injuries outside Craigieburn Community Hospital about 7.50pm on Wednesday.
A hospital staff member performed CPR on the teen, but Darweish died in a car park just off Lygon Drive.
On Friday, the accused 16-year-old was meant to face a children’s court charged with offences including murder, but he failed to get on the prison bus.
The hearing was held in his absence and a magistrate was told the accused teen was also charged with committing an indictable offence on bail, having been charged and bailed by police for separate alleged offending on June 27.
The 16-year-old and his co-accused, a 15-year-old boy, also charged with murder, were remanded in custody.
The court heard it was the 15-year-old boy’s first time in custody, and he was concerned about other boys currently housed in the same remand unit. This, the magistrate heard, needed to be flagged with custody staff.
The magistrate granted police extra time to compile their brief of evidence, and the accused boys’ cases were adjourned until November.
Earlier, police revealed that a burnt-out car linked to the incident had since been found in Oaklands Junction, just over 10 kilometres from where Darweish was found.
A 20-year-old Beveridge man was arrested and charged with criminal damage by fire, and granted bail. A 15-year-old girl was charged with affray and theft of motor vehicle, and she was also bailed to appear at children’s court at a later date.
On Thursday evening, more than a dozen friends of Darweish gathered at the Craigieburn scene in persistent rain confirmed his identity to The Age.
The boys created a makeshift memorial with photos, flowers and a teddy bear for their friend, who they said was a student at Mount Ridley College.
“He was a sweet guy,” said one boy, granted anonymity due to his age.
The crime scene was cleared before 8am on Thursday as patients arrived at the Craigieburn Community Hospital in cold, windy weather.
Sand covered a small patch of bitumen at the entrance to the medical centre’s car park, where Darweish was found.
Northern Health, which runs the hospital, confirmed a staff member found the teen bleeding.
“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. We are also providing support to the staff members involved in this tragic event,” a spokesperson said.
The Education Department is providing support for affected schools, a spokesperson said.
“The death of the young person in a violent incident last night will be extremely distressing for the local communities involved,” the spokesperson said.
