WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new update for iPad users. It will now allow users to register their WhatsApp account directly on an iPad. Until now, the iPad has only worked in companion mode, meaning users had to link their iPad to an iPhone or Android phone by scanning a QR code. But now, the report suggests that the app allows users to register their WhatsApp account directly on an iPad, making it their primary device rather than just a companion to their phone.

Before delving into the new feature, a few words on companion mode. Generally, companion mode works well with most people, though it comes with some limitations. For example, Users in companion mode couldn’t share a live location, create or view broadcast lists, or communicate with businesses using Flows. And if they didn’t open WhatsApp on their primary phone for 14 consecutive days, the app would automatically log out all linked devices, including the iPad.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently rolling out gradually with the latest WhatsApp update for iPadOS, version 26.25.74.

What changes with primary device support

Setting up WhatsApp on iPad as a primary device works the same way as setting it up on a phone. Users enter their country code and phone number, wait for a six-digit verification code, and they’re in. Those who have already set up a passkey for their WhatsApp account can use it instead of the verification code, making the process faster and more secure.

Once the iPad is set as the primary device, all the restrictions of companion mode go away. Live location sharing works, broadcast lists are accessible, and there’s no risk of being logged out after two weeks of phone inactivity.

Companion mode isn’t going anywhere

WhatsApp isn’t doing away with companion mode. Users who want to keep their phone as the main device and use the iPad as a secondary one can still do exactly that. When setting up the app on iPad for the first time, users will be given the choice between the two options. Those who already have their iPad linked as a companion device don’t need to change anything.

The report suggests that the feature is currently available to some users and is rolling out to more accounts over the coming weeks.
