It is easy to look at Egypt and only see Premiership winner Mo Salah and assume they are a team of winners.
But Egypt should not hold any fears for Australia, who have a far better record at World Cups than the Pharaohs.
Egypt only won their first-ever World Cup match against New Zealand at this very World Cup, which seems like a remarkable statistic.
Yet it’s true.
The seven-time Africa Cup of Nations winners have played 10 games at World Cup finals tournaments, winning that one game against New Zealand.
They have also managed four draws and five defeats.
Australia, if you’re interested, have played more than twice as many matches, 23, and have five wins to their name at World Cup finals.
Egypt made the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations but were far from impressive in doing so, labouring to wins over Zimbabwe and South Africa and drawing with Angola.
They then beat Benin after extra time, Côte d’Ivoire before losing to Senegal.
Getting to the knock out rounds at this World Cup is a massive deal for Egypt, just as it is the Aussies.
