Roads have been closed off after a train derailed in a small town in the NSW Southern Highlands.

The train, which was carrying concrete for construction material company Boral, came off its rails on Berrima Rd in New Berrima on Saturday.

The freight train fell to its side, leaving five carriages upturned and prompting a massive clean-up by emergency services.

A Boral spokesman confirmed the freight train was being operated by its rail services partner “with their equipment”.

“The site is currently under the direction of NSW Police and the rail regulators,” the spokesman told NewsWire.

“We sympathise with the inconvenience caused to the travelling public, and we are committed to working closely with relevant authorities and our rail services partner to aid in resolving the incident.”

No injuries have been reported.

Berrima Rd was closed in all directions while emergency services worked to clear the scene.

NSW Police were called to the scene to assist with traffic.
