Taylor Swift’s wedding day was overshadowed by personal heartbreak after one of the singer’s closest lifelong supporters died as she married NFL star Travis Kelce.
The singer and her NFL star partner Travis, both 36, tied the knot during a lavish ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday (03.07.26) night, bringing together hundreds of celebrity guests for one of the most closely watched showbusiness events of the year.
But the celebrations were also marked by the death of Kirk Schwabe, 69, a former teacher and bodyguard who had remained a trusted figure throughout Taylor’s rise to global fame.
The Telegraph reported Kirk died from renal cancer on 3 July – the same day Taylor and Travis exchanged vows.
Before becoming part of Taylor’s security team at the request of her family, Kirk had served as a Chicago police officer and later taught criminal justice at Henderson High School in Nashville, Tennessee, between 2004 and 2006.
He went on to protect Taylor during the early years of her career as her fame accelerated, remaining close to the singer long after stepping away from the role.
Taylor’s wedding dominated headlines as the Madison Square Garden venue was transformed into an indoor garden for around 1,000 of the couple’s guests, while giant billboards outside the venue confirmed the couple’s marriage.
In one of his final interviews before Taylor’s wedding, Kirk reflected on the advice he gave his former student as her career took off.
He said: “You’re a superstar. This is not fun and games no more. You are it. Everything keeps going up and up and up, and the sky’s the limit for you.”
Kirk also described the pressure of protecting the singer during her early years of superstardom. He said: “If anything happens, I’m the guy… .
“We got four or 500 people in here and I got extra security guards, but I don’t know a lot of those guys who got hired, I don’t know what their qualifications are.”
Taylor paid tribute to Kirk years earlier by naming her teacher character “Mr. Schwabe” in her cameo appearance in Garry Marshall’s romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, a nod to the man who had taught and later protected her.
Although Kirk eventually stepped away from the job because he was exhausted by the demands of Taylor’s growing fame, he continued to follow her career closely.
His family said he remained immensely proud of everything she achieved and had been delighted that she was marrying Travis.
Speaking in his final interview, Kirk also expressed his confidence in Taylor’s choice of husband.
He said: “I do trust Taylor’s judgment. She knows what’s best.”
Taylor’s marriage to Travis has become one of the biggest entertainment stories of the year, with reports describing the ceremony as an intimate celebration despite the scale of the event.
The pair, whose relationship began in 2023 after Travis publicly spoke about trying to meet Taylor during her record-breaking Eras Tour, exchanged personal vows before family, friends and a host of celebrity guests.
Comic Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony, while Sir Paul McCartney performed during the celebrations.
Taylor, whose Eras Tour became one of the highest-grossing concert tours in history and cemented her status as one of the world’s biggest recording artists, has remained at the centre of headlines throughout the year following the release of her album The Life of a Showgirl and her high-profile marriage to Travis.
Guests at the wedding had been sworn to secrecy, but AMC Entertainment chief executive Adam Aron revealed details of the ceremony in a post on social media before it was deleted.
He described the venue’s elaborate décor, Taylor’s wedding dress and the couple’s first kiss, despite the event’s strict no-phone policy and efforts to keep proceedings private.
