England midfielder Jordan Henderson faces an anxious wait to see if his World Cup is over after badly injuring his wrist during England’s celebrations after their 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

Henderson was with his team-mates singing Wonderwall after a famous win when he slipped trying to climb over the advertising hoardings to re-enter the pitch.

England physios sprinted to the technical area to get equipment to treat Henderson next to the goal near the away end, then paramedics carried the Brentford midfielder to the dressing room on a stretcher.

“Not good. Not good. We have a defender now with a red card and Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It is really bad,” Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, said.

England produced one of their best World Cup performances to win in Mexico City, despite Jarell Quansah’s red card.

As the end-of-game rendition of Wonderwall ended, Henderson landed badly on his arm, which meant he had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher with oxygen required.

Harry Kane, the England captain, also confirmed that Henderson sustained an injury of sorts.

“Hendo just fell over there,” he said. “It was a crazy game, we had to fight. We had to find something. I have just been singing there and I cannot really talk.

“Everything was against us, but we found a way. I thought I got to the ball first, but it was one of those days where the ref gave a lot against us. In the end it did not matter. I’m happy.”

Jude Bellingham added: “He [Henderson] is in a bit of bother. But our medical team have everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him.”

Henderson was not in the starting line-up for the Mexico clash, but did pick up a yellow card for his actions on the sideline in added time.

He made his first appearance of the tournament against Panama in the group stage, coming on for the last six minutes.
