An Indian woman who landed a job in New York after facing 420 rejections shared the mindset she chose to begin her career with. Instead of celebrating only the job offer, she spoke about refusing to let her work define her identity, striking a chord with professionals navigating competitive job markets.

The video was shared by Instagram user Divya Bansal, who is currently based in New York and graduated from New York University (NYU).

In the video, Divya walked through the streets of New York while reflecting on the beginning of a new chapter in her life. She revealed that it was her first day at work after securing a job just one week after graduating from NYU as an international student.

Sharing her journey, she said she had applied for around 420 jobs, received only three interview calls, and ultimately landed two offers. She acknowledged that in today’s economy, where getting a job often feels tied to one’s self-worth, achieving this milestone meant a lot to her.

However, she explained that she did not want her career to become her entire identity.

Divya said the job would be one part of her life, something that would challenge her, help her grow, and pay her bills, but it would not define who she was as a person. She added that she wanted her work to revolve around her life, rather than allowing her life to revolve around work.

She said she would continue dancing, going to the gym, cooking meals that reminded her of home, and making time for the people she loved. According to her, once people begin treating work as their entire identity, they slowly start losing interest in it.

“I came to New York to build a life and not just a career,” she said, adding that while her career was something she did, it was not who she was.

In the caption, Divya elaborated on the struggles she faced as an international student. She said that despite limited opportunities and visa-related challenges, she managed to secure the role after hundreds of rejected applications.

Calling it a dream come true, she added that the experience had also taught her that while a career forms a part of one’s identity, it should never become the whole of it.

The video prompted an outpouring of encouragement from viewers, many of whom congratulated her on reaching the milestone and wished her success in her new role.

Others said her perspective on separating personal identity from professional life was refreshing, adding that a job should remain only one aspect of life rather than becoming its defining feature.

Several users also agreed with her message that building a fulfilling life outside work is just as important as building a successful career.
