An expert investigator has explained what do to if you spot a UFO.

Mick West – who has looked into around 1,000 potential unidentified aerial phenomenon [UAP] sightings over the years – has given an insight into the steps you should take if you spot something strange in the sky revealing the apps that can help determine whether it’s a genuine sighting or if there is a more Earthly explanation.

The most important factor in determining whether a sighting is genuine is having an original video – rather than a downloaded copy – and it’s even better if there’s audio too.

West recommends a number of apps and programs which can be used to analyse the footage including Invisor, which can display and compare technical information about video, audio, and photo files, and the took he created himself called Sitrec, which uses line of sight mapping, flight data integration and sensor recreation.

He also highlights free-to-use app FlightRadar24, which tracks the movements of aircraft and can help establish what might be up in the air at the time of the sighting.

In a piece written for Skepticalinquirer.org, West explained how he used flight tracking to determine the validity of a potential sighting which appeared as three lights “hovering over a building” in the US state of Cincinnati.

He wrote: “One of the more common sources of UAP sightings is aircraft. In decades past, UFO researchers would have to call the local airports, or even travel agents, to try to determine what planes might have been seen.

“Now plane schedules are all online, and beyond that, we can now replay the flight activity over a certain area to see what planes might have been visible …

“In a recent example, a spotter near Cincinnati saw what looked like a triangle of three lights hovering over a building at 00:14 UTC on October 12. I suspected this was three planes heading toward the camera.

“So, I ran through the process above, and sure enough there were three planes in a row heading straight for the camera location.”

West also explained that some strange goings-on in the night sky can also be explained by stars, planets, and satellites.

He added: ” Celestial objects, such as stars, planets, and satellites, can be viewed on sites (or apps) such as Stellarium. This allows you to see what the night sky would look like at any time, from any position on Earth.

“Many UAP sightings are planets, bright stars (such as Sirius), or satellites. Stellarium is clunky but powerful and accurate.”
