The Karnataka government’s efforts to protect the state’s interests in the Cauvery water dispute were supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) on Sunday, August 2. It also urged the state to ensure farmers had access to clean water and to expedite the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, which is a long-awaited project.
BJP state senator BY Vijayendra stated that the party had expressed a strong position on protecting Karnataka’s water rights after speaking at the all-party meeting that Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had convened. He noted that while good flows into the Cauvery lake had lowered the pressure on Tamil Nadu’s ability to release water, the government’s top priority remained to protect the interests of Karnataka’s producers.
Because of the significant flows into the Cauvery watershed, there is no immediate crisis right now. However, the state government may continue to monitor the situation and make sure that farmers ‘ passions are never compromised, according to Vijayendra.
The BJP demands quick action on the Mekedatu job.
The state authorities should act quickly on the Mekedatu initiative, the BJP head added, noting that the Centre had made it clear that the neighboring state needed to give the plan prior approval.
” On Mekedatu, the Union government has taken a stand that is both inclusive and obvious. He advised Karnataka to instantly resubmit the requested proposal and immediately pursue the project.
Basavaraj Bommai, a former chief minister and BJP member, cautioned the government against becoming comfortable due to the recent rise in dam inflows.
” This was a significant all-party conversation. The government shouldn’t low its guard, even though the current water position provides temporary relief. It is crucial to manage water in both medical and long-term, Bommai said.
Water availability may be planned throughout the entire year.
He emphasized that planning for water supply throughout the year may be made in order to account for the water needs of farmers in the Mandya and Mysuru regions as well as Bengaluru’s growing need for drinking water.
Bommai furthermore urged the government to make emergency programs for any upcoming gap and protect standing plants in the Cauvery lake.
Bommai said the Centre had shown a positive and encouraging attitude toward the task in response to the Mekedatu plan. The Union state has for the first moment clearly stated its favorable opinion of Mekedatu. Yet the Chief Minister acknowledged during the conference that this had strengthened Karnataka’s situation, he said.
Following the recent recommendation by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee regarding water transfer to Tamil Nadu, the all-party meeting was convened in the wake of popular protests across Karnataka. Political parties, producer groups, and pro-Kannada organizations have urged Karnataka to protect its water sources while ensuring compliance with legal responsibilities.
In order to come to an agreement on protecting Karnataka’s hobbies in the continuing Cauvery debate, many senior officials, including Union Ministers, position officials, opposition officials, legal professionals, and senior government officials, attended the meeting.
