Australia’s Formula 1 superstar Oscar Piastri has thanked his fans on X in a cheeky nod to one of the most controversial events of his career.
The McLaren driver sent out a tweet overnight, thanking his followers for all of the “anniversary messages”.
The anniversary in question?
Four years since Piastri unequivocally denied Alpine’s statement that the driver had signed with them for the 2023 season.
After two-time world champion Fernando Alonso confirmed his shock exit from Alpine in 2022, the team wasted no time confirming their academy driver Piastri as his replacement on August 2, 2022.
The problem was Piastri and his management had clearly not been consulted on the announcement.
Within hours, Piastri had released his own social media statement, denying he had put pen to paper for the French racing team and confirmed he had no plans to join them despite being their academy driver throughout his junior career.
“I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year,” his tweet read.
Piastri went on to sign for McLaren for 2023 and is signed there until at least the end of 2028.
The tweet is still recirculated daily throughout Formula 1’s social media circles.
“Thanks for all the anniversary messages,” Piastri tweeted overnight, clearly overwhelmed with the attention the anniversary of the blunder received.
