Recently, actor and Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kangana Ranaut criticised the student protests organised by the Cockroach Janta Party. She described the young protesters as the “gutter generation”, drawing widespread condemnation. A video now shared widely on social media claims to show Ranaut being physically attacked because of those remarks.

The video shows a woman being attacked by a crowd as she gets out of a car. As soon as she steps out of the car, people present there start beating her and pulling her hair.

India Today Fact Check found that the woman in the video is actually Trinamool Congress leader Pranayeeta Das. On July 30, a mob attacked her outside the Kotwali police station in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.

OUR PROBE

The viral video featured a partial logo. We found that it was that of a West Bengal-based news outlet called Jalpaiguri Digital News. On its Facebook page, we found a longer, clearer version of the viral video shared on July 30.

According to the post, the woman in the video was Pranayeeta Das (also spelt Pranayita in different reports), daughter of Trinamool Congress leader Krishna Das, and the video was from the Jalpaiguri Kotwali police station.

The Telegraph’s report on July 31 also used a screenshot from the viral video. According to it, Das had gone to the Kotwali police station in Jalpaiguri on July 30 in connection with a case of post-poll violence in West Bengal. At that time, BJP workers reportedly pelted eggs at her. She was also pushed and shoved at the main gate of the police station.

According to a report by EI Samay, Das is the education officer of the Jalpaiguri District Council. Her father, Krishna Das, was the Trinamool Congress candidate from Jalpaiguri Sadar Assembly seat and had lost the election. Both she and her father are accused in a case of violence that occurred after the 2026 Bengal Assembly elections. Six BJP workers were allegedly attacked the day after the election results were declared.

We did not find any report of Kangana Ranaut being physically assaulted following her controversial statement on the CJP protests.

Thus, it is clear that the viral claim is false.
