Tom Holland’s latest outing as Spider-Man has climbed to the top of the global box office after just one week in cinemas – with Spider-Man: Brand New Day overtaking Toy Story 5 to become the highest-grossing film of the year.

The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios blockbuster, starring Tom Holland, 30, and his wife Zendaya, 29, has generated $1.155 billion worldwide in just seven days, including $449 million in North America and $706.3 million internationally.

The total, reported by Variety, moves the latest installment in the long-running superhero franchise ahead of Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, which has earned $1.067 billion since its release in June.

The milestone marks another record-breaking achievement for the film, which has enjoyed one of the fastest theatrical runs in modern cinema history.

The latest figures build on an unprecedented opening week.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day recorded the biggest Tuesday in North American box office history with $42m, surpassing the previous record of $39 million set by Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

It also delivered the highest-grossing Monday on record with $47 million, overtaking Black Panther, which earned $40 million on its first Monday in 2018.

The film has also become the fastest release to reach $400 million at the North American box office, achieving the milestone in just four days.

Globally, it passed $1 billion in six days, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach the landmark. Only Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame reached the milestone more quickly, earning $1.2 billion worldwide in three days during its 2019 release.

The record-breaking run comes after Brand New Day also secured the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history with $360 million and the second-largest global debut ever with $932 million.

Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, reflected on the film’s early success during its opening weekend.

He said: “So I guess movies aren’t dead after all?”

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, attributed the success to the enduring popularity of Spider-Man and the actor who has portrayed Peter Parker across four standalone films.

He said: “People can write about changing tastes, but as characters that grow and evolve through the decades, there are none better than the Marvel characters – and none better than Peter Parker.”

Kevin added: “When you find an actor like Tom Holland to bring that character to life, it is the magic formula.”

The latest success extends Tom’s long association with Marvel after first appearing as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War before leading the Spider-Man trilogy and returning in ensemble films including Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

His portrayal of the web-slinging superhero has made him one of the defining faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Zendaya reprises her role as Michelle “MJ” Jones, continuing a collaboration with Tom that has spanned several Spider-Man films.

Away from Marvel, she has also remained in the spotlight through her Emmy-winning performance in Euphoria, while anticipation continues to build around Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, in which both she and Tom are part of the ensemble cast.

The latest Spider-Man success also comes amid renewed discussion about the health of the cinema industry, with the film’s record-breaking performance providing a major boost for theatrical exhibition.
