St Kilda head coach Ross Lyon said embattled forward Max King was seeing “the light” of his bleak situation.
King’s return in Round 21 after two seasons on the sidelines took a dark turn during the third quarter when he was ruled out with a left hamstring strain.
Just days after his first game in two years, King was announced as out for the rest of the season.
Lyon maintained he had no regrets on King playing his first game in two years, despite the injury that followed.
“In the context of life, (the injury) is probably insignificant,” Lyon told media on Thursday morning.
“We get the concern, but there’s always stories of players seeing the other side of it.”
“He’s mentally strong, his family’s behind him and we’re behind him, so we’ll see the other side.”
The Saints’ coach said he’d spent time with the player since the injury.
“I’ve been over to his house, had some bread, had a cinnamon scroll, had a good chat about life and offered plenty of support,” Lyon said.
“He knows we’re in his corner.”
Lyon’s side takes on Carlton at 7:20pm at Marvel Stadium on Sunday in a 10th vs. 11th clash with huge implications for the final spot in the top 10.
St Kilda have won two of their last three meetings, most recently beating the Blues by 39 points in May.
Lyon said the consequences of the result did not need to be mentioned to the players.
“Everyone wants to earn the right to play finals,” he said.
“(The media) are talking about it, I’m aware of it, and (the players) are aware of it.”
