A mother’s instincts may have saved her three-month-old baby during a terrifying day-time attack in Northbridge on Tuesday.
35-year-old Ling Chang had just locked her infant inside her car on James Street when she noticed a woman behaving suspiciously nearby.
Ms Chang believed the stranger was trying to break into her vehicle and feared she was targeting her baby.
Dashcam footage captured the woman yelling at Ms Chang.
“Open it now, now, now,” the woman can be heard shouting.
“Hurry the f*** up, open this f****** door.”
The confrontation quickly turned violent, with the woman headbutting Ms Chang as the terrified mother called for help.
The attacker continued shouting at her.
“I will smash this f****** window,” she can be heard screaming.
As Ms Chang pleaded for assistance, two members of the public intervened, frightening the woman away before police arrived and arrested her nearby.
Speaking through tears, Ms Chang said she could not stop thinking about what might have happened if her baby had not been locked safely inside the car.
“I think the most scary part is, what happens if I didn’t lock the car, what happens to my baby?” Ms Chang said through tears.
“I hope I can gather myself to get out of the house on my own but at the moment, I am really scared.”
The 32-year-old accused appeared in court on Thursday charged with assault and was remanded in custody.
Ms Chang said she was grateful her baby was unharmed and hoped no other parent would experience a similar ordeal.
“Hopefully the government will put in some safety measures perhaps police patrol a bit more around the area where this sort of things happen,” she said.
