Fremantle were potentially robbed of the chance to go for a Hail Mary play against Melbourne after the Demons were awarded a mark seemingly outside the field of play in the dying moments of their thrilling win.
After Matthew Johnson spilled a mark at half-back, Tom Sparrow received a handball from the contest and popped a kick inside 50 to Bayley Fritsch running back with the flight.
However, by the time Fritsch got his hands to it, the ball looked to have floated over the boundary, which would have been an out-on-the-full free kick to Fremantle.
It would have given the Dockers an unlikely chance to go from end to end in just over 20 seconds, but instead the mark was paid, killing the contest as Fritsch soaked up the clock before kicking a behind after the siren.
“Gee, that was touch and go,” Leigh Montagna said on commentary, “that will be the ball game.”
While the umpires awarded the ball as being in play, fans were far clearer in their view of where the ball landed.
“Fritsch marked that in the 10th row with 20 seconds to go and ran down the clock. The AFL has had a shocking week,” Rick Morris said on X, formerly Twitter.
Don’t want to upset the Freo but I was looking right down the boundary at that last mark by Fritsch and it was clearly over the line by half a metre. Oh well. That’s footy,” wrote one Demon’s supporter.
“Marked that over the fence, and the Vic commentators said nothing,” Rob Smith wrote.
