A hiker who fell from Mount Beerwah on Saturday afternoon and spent the night stranded on the mountain has been rescued and is recovering in hospital.
Emergency services were called after the man, in his 20s, fell while hiking the popular Sunshine Coast Hinterland summit in the Glass House Mountains National Park about 4.30pm on Saturday.
The man suffered ankle injuries in the fall and was unable to descend the mountain.
Paramedics and fire crews gathered at the base of Mount Beerwah, but due to the time of day and terrain, were unable to rescue him on Saturday.
Members of the Queensland Fire Department hiked to the man and spent the night with him.
A rescue helicopter winched the man from Mount Beerwah about 9.30am on Sunday.
He was then transported by road to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
Mount Beerwah is the highest peak in the Glass House Mountains at 565 metres, and is considered the most difficult and strenuous to climb, with hikers required to rock scramble (use hands for stability) at times.
Earlier this year, two 18-year-olds – Lorielle Georgina and Jack Thatcher – died after falling between 60 and 90 metres down the mountain.
Georgina died at the scene, while Thatcher passed away three days later, due to his injuries.
Search and rescue crews were forced to abseil down the mountainside to retrieve the pair.
The following month, an interstate tourist died while hiking on nearby Mount Tibrogargan, which stands at 363 metres.
