Eight teens have now been charged with murder over the death of 21-year-old Jongkuch Peter Kur Jongkuch Achieu, after police arrested four more males in a fresh breakthrough on Sunday.
The latest arrests came two weeks after a violent disturbance erupted in Bahrs Scrub, south of Brisbane, where emergency crews were called to Discovery Blvd about 2.15am on July 26.
Police said officers arrived within eight minutes to find a scene of extensive destruction, with significant damage to cars and a nearby home.
“As members of the group fled the scene, officers were alerted to a 21-year-old Redbank Plains man having been located nearby on Orchard Ave with significant head injuries,” police said.
Mr Achieu was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition, but later died from his injuries on August 1.
In the latest development, detectives from the Logan Criminal Investigation Branch and Homicide Investigation Unit arrested four more males at Morayfield about 5pm on August 9.
An 18-year-old man from Acacia Ridge, an 18-year-old man from Sunnybank, a 17-year-old boy from Doolandella and an 18-year-old man from Inala have each now been charged with murder.
The two 18-year-olds are due to appear in Richlands Magistrates Court on Monday, while the 17-year-old and 18-year-old are expected to face Brisbane Magistrates Court.
Those charges come after police on August 6 charged four others — 18-year-olds Joshua Jackson John Jirima and Kandour Khalil Tagelsir, and 19-year-olds Amnaud Nduwayo and Sunday Obol — with murder over the same incident.
Police previously released footage of specialist officers forcing entry into a home during the earlier raids, yelling, “Show your hands,” before four teenagers were seen handcuffed face down on a living room floor and told they were being arrested for murder.
Detectives carried out 14 simultaneous searches across Logan, South Brisbane and Ipswich as part of the inquiry, with several people taken into custody.
The property at the centre of the incident is believed to have been operating as short-stay accommodation.
Neighbours said a party had been under way before violence allegedly spilt out of the house and into the street, leaving cars damaged, the home badly affected and the road shut down for much of the following day.
Several other partygoers were also taken to hospital with laceration-type injuries.
Police thanked members of the community for the “significant assistance, co-operation and support provided throughout the investigation”.
Police also said residents, community leaders and other representatives had worked with investigators and encouraged people to come forward, adding that information from the public had been valuable to the inquiry.
Mr Achieu’s death sparked an outpouring of grief, with family and community members describing the loss as shattering.
“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I inform you of the passing of Jongkuch Peter Kur Jongkuch Achieu,” a family statement posted to a community group said.
“This is a life cut far too short and a loss felt profoundly by all who knew and loved him.”
Others shared tributes online in the days after his death.
“Jongkuch will always be in our hearts and our prayers,” one person wrote on Facebook.
“Jongkuch’s life was cut short in its prime, a promising future ahead of him,” another said.
