Anupama Parameswaran has opened up about the experience behind a recent Instagram post that hinted at the end of a relationship. In an interview with I AM with Dhanya Varma, the actor said she had spent the past two years dealing with what she described as narcissistic abuse, and that the post came only after she had begun to heal and felt ready to speak about what she had experienced.
Without revealing the identity of the person involved, Anupama said there was a long period of pain and self-reflection behind the post. She explained that it was not something she shared impulsively, but a message she put out after reaching a point where she could finally acknowledge what had happened to her.
“There are two years of pain, physical and emotional destruction, behind that one post,” she said, explaining that she did not want to share something simply for the sake of making a statement. Instead, she wanted to speak when she felt ready and had made progress in her healing.

Anupama went on to explicitly describe her experience as “narcissistic abuse” and spoke about the different ways people respond to the term.
She recalled watching an Instagram Reel in which actor Madonna Sebastian discussed narcissistic abuse. Anupama said the subject affected her so deeply that she physically started shaking. She said there are people who understand the experience because they have lived through it, as well as family members and friends who have witnessed someone close to them go through it.
She said, “The first category is who know who have suffered, the family and friends who have seen someone suffer. The second category who have no idea about it. They must have heard the term, but they did not have to research about it, and the third one who would call it gender-based, and post negative comments based on assumptions. The next category is to who I want to talk to, those who have been there and haven’t identified it yet. That is the most dangerous category.”
According to Medical News Today, narcissistic abuse refers to a pattern of emotional and psychological manipulation in which a person uses control, belittling or other harmful behaviour to undermine someone else’s confidence and sense of self. The term is often used in the context of relationships where one person consistently seeks power or control over the other, leaving the victim feeling diminished, confused or emotionally dependent.
‘I started to shrink’
Anupama said she would not name the person involved, but opened up about how the relationship affected her sense of self. She recalled feeling as though she was becoming smaller rather than growing as a person.
“I started to shrink,” she said, adding that she had lost a significant amount of weight during that period. Rather than feeling that she was “blooming”, she said she felt herself gradually diminishing.
Her comments offer more context to an Instagram post she shared last month, in which she spoke about letting go, reclaiming her voice and finding her way back to herself.
In the post, Anupama wrote about choosing her life without seeking permission or living in fear. She also thanked her followers for standing by her and said their messages, prayers and kindness had reached her during a difficult period.
She ended the post by celebrating healing, freedom and the decision to choose herself.

Anupama and Dhruv Vikram’s dating rumours
Anupama’s comments come amid longstanding speculation about her relationship with actor Dhruv Vikram. Dating rumours surrounding the two surfaced in early 2025 while they were working on Mari Selvaraj’s Bison Kaalamaadan.
The speculation intensified after an unverified photograph purportedly showing the two kissing circulated online. Fans also linked them to a shared Spotify playlist, which they claimed had featured the picture as its display image.
Their public interactions further fuelled the rumours. At an awards ceremony in Chennai, Anupama appeared visibly shy when Dhruv wished her on stage on her birthday. She referred to him as her “2 AM call”.
Later, Dhruv shared a cosy selfie with Anupama from another awards ceremony in Mumbai, which she re-shared with a heart. The two subsequently became less vocal about each other in public, prompting speculation about whether they had decided to keep their relationship private or had gone their separate ways.
Neither Anupama nor Dhruv has publicly confirmed the status of their relationship.
