Shocking vision has emerged of the moment a toddlers legs were caught in a bus, as it pulls away, dragging the child and an adult behind it.
In the vision, captured on a Friday evening in June and obtained by Nine News, the boy and a man understood to be his father are seen inside the vehicle before exiting the bus through the rear doors.
An external camera then captures the moment the doors close on the child’s legs, leaving him hovering over the ground, before the bus starts to drive away along Barkly Street in St Kilda. The man tries to keep holding the boy, but eventually falls over.
The bus quickly stops, before the boy is freed from the doors.
In a statement provided to Nine News, Matthew Campbell, managing director of bus company Kinetic, said it was a “distressing incident, and we are sincerely sorry”.
“We have reinforced safety protocol and incident reporting procedures with all drivers,” Campbell said.
The vision, which was posted online by Safe Transport Victoria, was later deleted from their page, but they have confirmed they are investigating.
The footage comes just months after a school boy’s backpack was caught in bus doors, and he was also dragged along a busy road.
Footage shared online by schoolboy Nathaniel’s distressed mother showed her son being dragged along Brandon Park Drive, Wheelers Hill, in Melbourne’s south-east in March, after his school backpack and right arm became caught in the door of the bus.
“As he was stepping off the bus that morning, the bus driver closed the back door on him, trapping his school bag and right arm before he had fully alighted the bus,” his mother shared online.
“The bus moved off before Nathaniel could free himself or call out for help, carrying him on the outside of the bus for about 350 metres.”
Ventura investigated the incident and sacked the driver.
